I started playing guitar when I was around 10. After trying a few instruments with not much success, I got a small nylon-string guitar from Argos. My parents found a guitar teacher by the name of Darren Moan in a large yellow book with phone numbers in it… I started a few one-to-one lessons and then started to go to his small classes. I wanted to begin to study grades and so I committed to one-to-one lessons. I spent a lot of years with Darren; some of my highlights were seeing his face the first time I drove myself to our lessons and, of course, when he rang me with my Grade 8 result.

I owe a lot to Darren as he has helped shape what I do today, I studied Music at university and I am now a Music Teacher and working Musician. Thank you, Darren..

Darren is a simply unbeatable tutor. He mentored me and taught me everything I know about guitar for 13 years. I progressed through RSL Grades 1-8 under his guidance. He is fluent in every style and genre imaginable and has the theoretical knowledge to back it up. He is extremely well priced and is great with flexibility of lessons. His mentoring allowed me to go from never having touched a guitar, to playing gigs in some of the country's biggest like the Ulster Hall, Empire Music Hall and Trinity. Darren helped me do more than play guitar, he has helped me love and master it.

I had started to teach myself guitar when I was about 19 but really couldn’t get past playing chords to songs. What I really wanted to learn was how to play lead guitar / solos but had no idea how to go about it.

I heard about Darren and thought I would give lessons a go and I can say that after the first lesson I was blown away and excited at the prospect that I could be taught the techniques and skills needed to play along with my guitar heroes.

Darren absolutely transformed my playing from simple chords, to complex guitar solos and all that underlies those, in terms of technique and theory. So much so that many years later, albeit playing bass in a band, I still get to show off the odd guitar solo - couldn’t have happened with Darren’s expert teaching.

Cant recommend Darren highly enough - patient, clear and concise in his approach to lessons and an incredibly skilled guitar player himself - perfect combination.”

“My daughter has been taught by Darren for the last 3 years- he is a brilliant, patient & encouraging teacher ! She is flying through the Rock School Grades but Darren’s inspirational way of teaching has also encouraged her to enjoy playing other music outside of exam pieces. Highly recommend!”

My name is Ben Murray

I am a couple years into my professional music career, having gone full time last year. I approach the guitar with production in mind, trying to meld together old school musicianship of hendrix and stevie ray with modern technology (ableton live) to create mad sounds. Playing the guitar has changed my life completely, All my friends are musicians, have been able to travel to play in amazing cities and I have the most fulfilling feeling doing what I love. I have two original music projects, Namely Fatmunk and Phantom Limb. I also session for many Belfast based artists, most notably Lemonade Shoelace who have gigged internationally (Mexico City, Austin, London)

Darren was my guitar teacher for a good few years and has an excellent, individualistic way of teaching the guitar. He catered to my personal interests and taught me in a way that helped me find a voice. My bad habits were ironed out and I was able to make sense of the fretboard through shape and scale exercises mixed with technique tightening and general musicality mentorship. Darren's teaching lay such a solid foundation for me going into my career as a guitar player playing multiple styles, inspiring an ear for dynamics and tone. I couldn't recommend him enough! (Other guitar players hate borrowing my picks as I still play the absolute thickest picks I can find in the shops, another thing i got from him)

Our daughter has been with Darren for over a year and has grown a love of guitar. She has improved immensely and really does look forward to going to her lesson.  Darren is a patient enthusiastic teacher; he makes the lessons fun and interesting… I would highly recommend him for anyone at any stage of their music journey!”

Darren has been teaching my two girls for a few years now and couldn't hope for a kinder, more patient teacher. They are presently tackling grade 2 and debut grade.

My daughter has been receiving guitar lessons from Darren since she was 13 and she is now almost 17! It is very clear that Darren has a passion for what he does and genuinely cares for his students. He is an excellent guitar tutor who has fuelled my daughter’s love of guitar and music so much so that she is now undertaking a course in music production and technology at college. In addition to all of the above, Darren is a really genuine and lovely guy. I wouldn’t go past Darren if you’re looking guitar lessons! 5 stars all the way!

My son enjoys weekly lessons with Darren. He started out with zero experience but quickly caught on and has done exams too. We've bought several more guitars too so this shows the keen interest he has! It is a pleasure to highly recommend this business.
